Neuerungen:

"Die Linux-Distribution Ubuntu 9.04 bietet ein neues Benachrichtigungssystem und unterstützt das Dateisystem Ext4. Darüber hinaus bietet die neue Version in erster Linie aktualisierte Komponenten.

Die Installation erfolgt wie von Ubuntu gewohnt von einer Live-CD aus. Dadurch lässt sich das Betriebssystem vor der Installation auf der Festplatte auch ausprobieren und beispielsweise überprüfen, ob Ubuntu die Hardwarekomponenten unterstützt. Die erste Neuerung betrifft bereits die Installation: Wer seine Festplatte selbst partitioniert, kann das Dateisystem Ext4 verwenden.

Ext4 wurde als Nachfolger des Quasi-Standarddateisystems Ext3 entwickelt. Gegenüber Ext3 kann Ext4 beispielsweise mit größeren Datenmengen – bis zu 1 EByte (1e18 Byte) – umgehen. Das Dateisystem soll ferner robuster sein und besser skalieren als Ext3. Seit dem Linux-Kernel 2.6.28, der in Ubuntu zum Einsatz kommt, ist es von den Entwicklern als stabil gekennzeichnet. Das Standarddateisystem in Ubuntu ist aber weiterhin Ext3 und wird daher auch bei der automatischen Partitionierung verwendet. So können Interessierte nun aber auch unter Ubuntu Ext4 endlich ausprobieren – Fedora beispielsweise bot diese Option schon in der Vergangenheit an.

Die Ubuntu-Entwickler aber raten noch davon ab, Ext4 zu verwenden, nachdem es in letzter Zeit zu Diskussionen über die Zuverlässigkeit des Dateisystems kam. An einer Lösung für das Problem arbeiten die Entwickler derzeit und rechnen damit, dass sie bald einen Patch veröffentlichen können. Dann können Nutzer ihr Ext3-Dateisystem nachträglich auf Ext4 umstellen.

Die Ubuntu-Entwickler haben ferner an der Startzeit des Systems gefeilt. Die ist aber natürlich auch von der verwendeten Hardware abhängig. Auf einem etwas betagten Testsystem mit Athlon 3000 und 1 GByte RAM brauchte Ubuntu so gut 45 Sekunden – auf aktueller Hardware sind durchaus kürzere Startzeiten denkbar. Laut Canonical um 25 Sekunden. Mit ausführlichen Benchmarks bei Phoronix ist zu rechnen.

Auf dem Desktop nutzt Ubuntu das aktuelle Gnome 2.26. Das Brennprogramm Brasero enthielt Ubuntu zwar schon zuvor, erst mit Gnome 2.26 ist es aber das Standardbrennprogramm der Desktopumgebung und so auch besser integriert. So ersetzt es das Brenn-Plug-in des Dateimanagers Nautilus und kann auch aus dem Videoplayer Totem heraus Filme brennen. Totem enthält neue Plug-ins, um sich mit UPnP/DLNA-Servern zu verbinden. Anstatt des Gnome-Instant-Messengers Empathy setzt Ubuntu weiter auf Pidgin.

Eben dieser ist einer der Kandidaten, die das neue Benachrichtigungssystem verwenden. Auch Programme wie der Network-Manager verwenden das System. Ziel ist es, die unterschiedlichen Benachrichtigungen optisch zu vereinheitlichen. So blendet Ubuntu die Meldungen in der rechten oberen Ecke ein. Aber auch die Ereignisse von Funktionstasten bei Notebooks zeigt Ubuntu auf diese Art an.

Das sieht gut aus – und wirkt übersichtlicher, da nicht mehr jedes Programm einen eigenen Weg der Benachrichtigung wählt. Allerdings müssen Anwendungen angepasst werden, um das System zu verwenden. Pidgin und Evolution beispielsweise wurden entsprechend angepasst. Es kann jedoch immer passieren, dass ein Programm doch noch seinen eigenen Weg geht. Leider gehören dazu derzeit auch prominente Anwendungen wie Firefox. Hier ist also definitiv noch Arbeit nötig. Auch sind die Benachrichtigungen nicht ganz so unaufdringlich, wie die Entwickler sie beschreiben.

Eine Änderung gibt es auch bei der Benachrichtigung über Updates: Ubuntu startet den Update-Manager jetzt automatisch, statt ein Icon im Panel anzuzeigen. Über Sicherheitsupdates informiert das System dabei einmal pro Tag; Updates, die nicht sicherheitsrelevant sind, werden einmal wöchentlich angezeigt.

Wie üblich wurde zudem die enthaltene Software aktualisiert. Ubuntu 9.04 enthält unter anderem schon den Firefox 3.0.9, OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, Gimp 2.6.6 und Pidgin 2.5.5.

Ferner nutzt Ubuntu den aktuellen X-Server 1.6 von X.org. Der enthält DRI2, das schon vor über einem Jahr vorgestellt wurde. DRI gewährt Programmen den Zugriff auf die Hardware, um direktes Rendering, etwa für OpenGL-Anwendungen, zu nutzen. Die neue Fassung soll unter anderem Verbesserungen bringen, von denen Desktopeffekte profitieren. Der "-ati"-Treiber nutzt EXA zur Grafikbeschleunigung und unterstützt 2D-Beschleunigung auch bei den R6xx/R7xx-Grafikchips – 3D-Beschleunigung steht bis zu den R5xx-Karten zur Verfügung. Für die R6xx/R7xx-Chips kann der proprietäre Fglrx-Treiber verwendet werden.

Wer Ubuntu auf dem Server nutzt, profitiert vom "dovecot-postfix"-Paket. Das richtet einen kompletten Mailserverstack, basierend auf Dovecot und Postfix, ein, der also POP3 und IMAP sowie SMTP, TLS und SASL unterstützt. Das vereinfacht die Einrichtung eines Mailservers, wobei natürlich weiterhin die Möglichkeit besteht, andere Lösungen zu installieren. Mit Eucalyptus ist außerdem ein Framework enthalten, um seine Rechner zu einer Private Cloud zu verbinden, die kompatibel zu Amazons Cloud-Dienst ist. Ebenso wie Ext4 handelt es sich aber noch um eine Technology Preview, die erst in Ubuntu 9.10 offiziell unterstützt wird.

Weiterhin finden Administratoren für den Server beispielsweise MySQL 5.1.30, Apache 2.2.11, Perl 5.10.0 und PHP 5.2.6 in Ubuntu."
